Gender rolesGender Roles is a staged photography series that examines traditional gender roles and the societal expectations surrounding partnership, domesticity, and identity. Through constructed scenes, exaggerated gestures, and role reversal, the project challenges the assumption that domestic and relational responsibilities are inherently tied to gender.
The series follows a man and a woman as they move through the routines of a single day. Initially presented in conventionally opposite roles—a housewife and a husband—their identities gradually shift, blend, and ultimately reverse. As the narrative unfolds, distinctions between masculine and feminine behaviors become increasingly fluid, revealing the performative nature of many gendered expectations. By the end of the day, both characters have fully exchanged roles, yet remain equally comfortable and fulfilled, suggesting that gender roles are adaptable rather than fixed.
Through Gender Roles, I invite viewers to reconsider inherited ideas about caregiving, work, commitment, and identity. The project proposes that roles within relationships are not predetermined but negotiated, evolving, and deeply personal. By visualizing this fluidity, the series encourages a broader conversation about how we define partnership and what it means to build a life together in a changing world.
